Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro

The historic relationship between A Brasileira and the Museum of Contemporary Art, created in 1911, appears in several books on the history of Portuguese art written in the 20th century.  This is not only due to artists gathering there, but especially because painter Columbano Bordallo Pinheiro, director of the Museum at the time, disliked the works produced by younger artists so much that he prevented those works from being admitted to the museum’s exhibitions. As a result, A Brasileira was also an unofficial Museum of Contemporary Art of that period.
