A missed rendezvous at A Brasileira

In 1934, on a trip to Portugal for a series of conferences at the Universities of Coimbra and Lisbon, Brazilian poet Cecília Meireles got int touch with Fernando Pessoa, with whom she arranged a meeting at A Brasileira do Chiado. After hours waiting and Fernando Pessoa failing to show up, she returned to her hotel. There, a note was waiting for her, signed by Fernando Pessoa, in which he was letting her know that he could not meet her because he had been advised not to in his morning horoscope. By way of apology, he left an autographed copy of “A Mensagem”, his only work in Portuguese published in his lifetime.
